A member of a prominent Chabad family in Australia was convicted on charges of child sexual abuse Friday, capping off a long-running scandal that rocked the country’s Jewish community when it first broke. Velvel Serebryanski, 61, was found guilty by a jury at the County Court of Victoria of having molested Manny Waks when he was still a child growing up in Melbourne’s Chabad-Lubavitch educational institutions. Waks is now an advocate for victims of child sex abuse.

NEWTON, MA — A former rabbi was arrested in the aftermath of a sting operation meant to address sexual exploitation of children, the Massachusetts State Police announced. Eric Gurvis, 67, was one of three people now facing multiple charges after being caught in the effort led by the State Police, Framingham Police, Middlesex Sheriff’s Office, and Middlesex District Attorney’s Office. Gurvis and the two other men reportedly were engaging with what they thought were underage children in conversations about potential sexual rendezvous, however they were actually talking with undercover law enforcement officers.
