My theory is that transgender people don't see themselves as fitting in to society at large and therefore can't relate to social customs as depicted as TV, so they instead look to a foreign country where customs are different. Also, consider the whole "magical girl transformation" trope in anime. Furthermore, there's the isekai subgenre as well.
