Compared to what I've heard from people visiting major cities in North America...China is paradise.
Well, Chicago and NYC and Denver are wonderful places as well, as long as you're not in the wrong neighborhood after nightfall, or broke.
China is not a high trust, low crime, place like Hungary or Japan. Sorry.

China is akin to a cyberpunk dystopia, with a billion ignorant peasants in hovels in the countryside, and well developed trade cities built upon the backs of slave factory workers...all controlled by a strong-armed government.
