It is one among many. No one forces them to join the military. Really its the parent's fault for not instilling moral values in the child who goes and joins the military. I get your point though, how could they know? The education system brainwashes them into thinking the military is righteous, the financial system robs them of their time and energy, the government robs them of their savings and the church teaches them not to worry about it all because they just need to be good so they can get into heaven.
That being said we are in an age where ignorance is a choice given how much information is available. So at some level they are culpable. Especially so if they realize that they were sold a lie and still stay in it for the paycheck.
