Possible, Elizabeth Smart was spotted at a fast food joint. Cops swooped in and saved the day.

More likely they were tracking him somehow. What's weird is that he didn't ditch the "ghost" gun and 3d printed suppressor (what a combo) and happened to have his manifesto on him.
