I think it's manipulation of the electromagnetic waves or radio frequencies to detonate electronics, like an emp but not and I think they have AI lighting the way.
Sifting for proof..

Doesn't even seem possible. What could you even blow up in a pager or walkie walkie? A very tiny capacitor?
I'm not entirely sure. I'm wondering about the chemicals in the batteries and somehow directing frequencies tuned to make it blow up. Sounds wild, if true.
Battery malfunctions tend to be more firey and long lasting. They don't have a single "pop" but more of a long burn with some pops. At least true for Lithium ion fires I've seen.

Good luck creating a perfectly syncronized single explosion with that.
So we need some force strong enough to turn the phone into shrapnel but I'm not convinced it has to be an implanted bomb. I'm wondering though, just like I wonder some weirdness about the towers kinda turning into dust. Nothing would suprise me anymore and I think there is usually some weirdness afoot and whatever everyone's talking about, I wanna look at other possibilities, crazy as they may seem. Truth is stranger than fiction, in my opinion.
Perhaps they found a way to override the circuitry in the battery so it releases a spike of energy enough to overheat the battery causing it to explode. Really wouldn't be that hard. Tallest skill has a point about not exposing that capability on low level fighters, but they may also have done it to intimidate
