I think what's notable here is that we're even beyond the charade of "someone getting in trouble for this". We should recognize that among the populace the sides are already chosen, so to speak. No such pantomime is necessary to fool those who are already fooled, or sufficient to fool those who are not.

"They" know this and act accordingly so as not to waste resources. We should do the same.
