I think your understanding, or at least your description, of the psychological mechanisms of Psy Ops/propaganda is far too rudimentary here and takes no account of the subtlety and imperceptibility of the effects public figures have in shaping the minds of masses.

however

Most participants were male (55.2%), and White (79.4%)

The largest proportion of participants (18.5%) resided California.

Most respondents identified as Democrats (46.4%)

It's how people's subconsciousness works. It's not a rational proposition. This is how behaviors and ideas are normalized - by example of well-esteemed individuals in society. Remember when the Royal family all "took" the jabby jabs? Ads work that way too. Read Edward Bernays - Propaganda.
