They have a stake. Elders are not necessarily nihilist and know the world will go on without them and they want to leave a legacy (they have families and children too). Those who believe in God know everything they do here will have consequences in the life after.
The question that brings to my mind is can you trust someone to make decisions for a future they have little or no stake in?
