Ukriane is less white than Russia due to Osman Empire raids and occupation. If you make genetic test on "Ukrainian" you will find Pole or Russian with some Turk addition. This Turk addition usually make hair and eyes darker. Like Bulgars or Serbs who was under Osman Empire occupation.
No "ancestral homeland" could be named "Ukraine" which is literally "outskirts" or "borderlands" in all slavic languages.
Also, "Ukrainians", being completly fictional nation created by politicians, with artificial language and non-existent history can't have any ancestry fundamentally.

One of global differencies between West and Russia is that West nearly destroyed ethnicity replacing it with citizenship. Even word "nationality" was perverted, like words "vaccine" or "trade". Word "nationality" comes from latin "natio" which means the same as greek "ethnos" and means etnicity, people of one blood.
In Russia etnicity and citizenship are completely different things. Whe have two different words - "Русский" и "Россиянин" to clearly distinguish between "Russian" as etnicity and "Russian" as citizenship. But the West always use that "Russian" term without any clarification. It is always funny to read something like "Russian oligarch Abramovich" or "Russian poet Pasternak".
West is completely supressed any ethnic self-conscionness by changing western languages and giving another meaning to the terms.
You just have no even lexical means to support any reasonable conversation on the topic of Russian (as country) antropology, etnicity relations, culture and all other stuff. :)
You can't distinguish "Русский" from "Россиянин", you can't distinguish citizenship from etnicity and for completely unknown reason believe that "Ukrainian" could be etnicity. :)

Genetically, "Ukrainians" are two different branches of slavs - Poles and Russians. Kind of 50/50 in Ukrainian SSR times with deduction of Crimea (40/60 with it). Plus some Romanians and Hungarians. It is no way "homogenous" by any means. :)
As for Russians (as etnicity), it is one of the most homogenous etniciry in the world of such size. Even largest China and India etnicities have less homogenity. You could easily find that in antropologist scientific articles.
