Really, I think that modern cars are too small. Accepting some small 1.7 meter width of rut as standard was extremely stupid.
With modern standard you could not sleep normally on backseat, a lot of things does not fit by width in trunk and so on.
Cars should be at least 2.5m wide, to be really comfortable.
Unfortunately, this train departed long ago. Today it is impossible to change anything, because all roads should be rebuild and all that stuff.
:)
PS: interesting thing, that Third Reich attempted to build wider railroad, made for humans, they even build some wide cars where was enough space for humans, and they was way more comfortable than modern passenger railroad cars build for kids or midgets in the best case.
Well, passenger planes are yet another story. :) I was lucky to get a flight on one from the first commercial batch of new TU-204s in mid-90s. That was amasing - wide soft chairs with two adjustments, more then enough space for legs - you could comfortably sit legs-crossed, roomy toilets, and so on. Economy class in that TU-204 was better than business one on any other planes at the time. It was the most comfortable plane I ever flew.
But when I got on newer TU-204 decade later - it was the same shit as other planes. They squized rows and toilets to fit few additional rows and replaced chairs to something much cheaper.
I think it's airlines dictate manufacturer to make planes with as dense seats as possible. Manufacturers are able and ready to make comfortable planes, but greedy airlines want cattle cars for maximum profit.

I find Amtrak to be so much better than flying.
