The state of MD has made it illegal not to take a job of it pays only $6 less than the one you lost. The consequence is you lose unemployment, and are required to pay it all back. Companies have been abusing this by reporting people who refuse to work for poverty wages.
This means when MD brags about how low its unemployment is, they know they're lying. People are either not applying, or just job hopping. It's not good enough to just not apply either. The State of Maryland requires your resume be up, and viewable on their website.
That’s something that happens even in more socialist European countries too. You could have a career in tech or engineering but if you’re made redundant and you refuse the job offer working in some catering part time job for like minimum wage your benefits are cut under their sanctions regime.
Sometimes they’ll intentionally only send people for job interviews at jobs which are way below their skill set and actually punish them if they apply for jobs which meet their skill set for unrealistic expectations and dismissive attitude toward work. In other words, redundant techie, you are forced to apply only for the minimum wage catering job because if you want a job like you had you are just taking the piss.
And, Maryland encourages the companies to report people. Every time I see them brag about their low unemployment, I know it's a lie. People just don't apply for it. I know two people that worked in MD for their last job, but live in WV. Both of them had that shit tried on them, and it didn't work because they live in WV. But, those assholes still tried that modern day slavery shit.
All companies do this for tax breaks. New hire paperwork is what is used for the life insurance policies that people just finding out about have been so vocal about recently.
Some of the newer HR software is monatizing employee data too. It's not enough to make money off their work any more
