In the 2006 Palestinian parliamentary elections, Hamas won a huge majority over the once-dominant Fatah party.2 Hamas won 76 out of 132 seats in the 132-seat chamber, while Fatah won 43 seats. Polls had predicted a coalition between the two parties as the most likely outcome of the vote, but a surprise surge in support for the Islamists took a party that calls for the destruction of the state of Israel into power. Hamas supporters celebrated in Khan Younis, south of the Gaza Strip after the election.1 Hamas received 44.45% of the party-list vote, and Fatah received 41.4%. Hamas and Fatah gained 29 and 28 seats, respectively. The other nine seats went to third parties. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2006/jan/26/israel1
