Similar to what Bill Cooper said, Alan Watt made the claim that in ancient Greece, attendance was made mandatory at theatrical performances for the purposes of indoctrination. I was never able to substantiate it, but then again They've had a couple of millennia to suppress that info.
Funny if true, though, because in "Lysistrata", the women go on a "sex strike" to end the Peloponnesian War. How far we've come.
