I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure that's exactly what it is. It's fantasy escapism but with an animal twist. To me it's very similar to the whole male-to-female trans thing, autogynephilia brought on by too much porn consumption. But people defend that as not being sexual, even though transvestism is a paraphilia. Are people saying furries aren't sexual?
It's a partial identity/persona thing. There are some on the far end that actually identify as animals.
For some of them it isn't sexual, but they are usually very odd to put it nicely.
It's common for there to be a fetish element to it or to have weird fetishes in addition to the persona.
There is a range I guess.
In wearing a fursuit they don their persona. The preferred term is fursona, but w/e. Acting out your persona is liberating in a sense.
You have the ones that act out the persona then you slide into the ones that engage in "activities" while in a fursuit.
Finally off the deep end you have some that are interested in animals which is rare afaik.
