Off-line storage has never been cheaper. You don't want to trust the 'cloud' for anything important.
Even cheap offline storage isn't a sure thing in the future.
Aren't most of the hard drive companies monopolized by two or three companies? Western digital, Seagate, Samsung, Hitachi? And those four probably share some suppliers for components. A factory burns down hard drives can double in price again.
What's going to happen there is that SSD technology is getting cheaper, faster, and pretty dense though nothing beats a multiplatter hard drive for density. But before Intel closed things down I worked on a 16 terabyte SSD and I know in the future others will have big storage units.
