You can buy Five Dollar Red Seal Notes on eBay for as little as 15 bucks. They are US treasury notes and were removed as legal tender in 1991, but still spendable. (which seems contradictory)

The notes are not redeemable for anything like gold or silver, they're mainly just a collectors item. The buying power of a Five Dollar Red Seal Note in the 60s was likely something close to 50 bucks today.
