Perhaps the psyop was "beat the Russians" but the ACTUAL mission was "pacify the sheep for the next 100 years and replace God with outer space"...

Because then people want to fund NASA instead of churches.

It seems to have worked a bit.

I don't know what the truth ultimately is. Its certainly possible. Who knows.
