In the US, illuminati was replaced by CFR which was created in 1921 with funds from the father of apartheid.

I don't know about the origins of the illuminati but depending on how you want to define it it must predate Sabbateans, they started in the middle ages whereas ancient Greek philosophers could be said to have been the original illuminati or at least the forerunners of them. They wanted to rule everyone else with secret knowledge. I have no idea if this was ever connected to gnosticism.
