Google and Microsoft killed off Lycos (by competition/advertising/bundling). Did the same to all other search engine companies.
Lycos had it's own spider engine (indexing).
Lycos people became unemployed, as google.com killed off the competition.
So the guys who knew how to do only one thing, formed another company, to do the thing they know: searches.
But they couldn't compete with indexing, so they relied on Google index (just like 99% do these days, that or MS/Bing index).
And then they set up a privacy ad campaign, to say they are safeguarding you and that they are "independent of Google". The fuck they are.
They are just search engine people, piggybacking of the Google index and prone to the same censorship and I wouldn't trust them any farther than I can throw them. There might be some backchannel deals between them and Google, I wouldn't be surprised.
There are better alternatives (though not many), search is your friend, discussed many times here.
