Ok so Yawhey was the name of the Golden Calf that the Hebrew Slaves were worshiping. The Golden Calf represented a volcano which they assumed was God.
Moses tried and tried to explain that the Golden Calf is NOT God and God is unseeable but the slaves wouldn't listen so Moses outright lied to them saying that God would punish them if they kept worshiping the Calf. It worked so Moses kept drilling this idea into their head. The bad part is that the myth of a punishing God partly came from Moses but also from the old Mystery Cults too which were before Judaism. Religion evolves and refines itself in the long run but it holds onto bad habits for a while before letting them go so the idea of a punishing God still hasn't worn off yet.
