So, Mao dropped growing political relations based on socialism of both countries, but trade never stopped, even in times of small armed conflicts on the border.
Overall, there was no any bonding to split. USSR and China was on their own politically, but continue to trade even in times of conflicts.
IDK, may be that myth of some close frendship between USSR and China is because of both countries was socialist with communist party at top. There was no any close relations between USSR and Yugoslavia or Albania.too, regardless of same political systems.
Socialistic world was not uniform, and there was different relations between countries. In any case, timespan of socialism in both Russia and China is just a tiniy piece in a very long history of trade relations.
