There's a self righteousness that can become a form of idolatry. Jesus repeatedly warns against this. They are blinded by their idolatry and are unable to see the Truth. Thus, they are serving the purpose of the deceiver. Anyone who has given into sun is essentially serving this same purpose. Paul explains this in Romans 3:21-26. Here's an excerpt:
21 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness is given through faith in[ Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God
Thus in this passage from John my interpretation is a rebuking of their motives including an explanation that their lineage is not sufficient for salvation.
I know the formerly called Mormon LDS are all wrapped up in that at the moment. They've embraced the damnedest self-righteous ideology you can imagine. Idolatry in it's purest form
