Was Tesla right?

I've heard that Tesla dreamed of creating mechanisms to generate free, unlimited energy, and that he was stopped from doing so by his peers, in especial Thomas Edison. Was he right? Did he actually have a way to produce unlimited energy? Has anyone been able to replicate such a machine?

By the way, if you have any interesting in Tesla, I highly recommend his (very strange and short) autobiography. It gives real insight IMO into his character and I think he was a pretty interesting guy.
