All these modern systems have been deeply, deeply penetrated. Some lowlights:

• Intel Management Engine, a processor overseeing the rest of your system
• All cars since the 2005 model year come with 3G connections
• All hard drives come from the factory with subverted microcode in the boot sector
• Jim stone recently reported that he now believes phone batteries themselves are penetrated for use as a vector

I concluded long ago that this struggle can no longer be thought of in terms of just "defending yourself".
