Airplane affordability was hugely destroyed by FAA regulations and other authority stuff. Today you can't repair airplane without buying bolts (literally) for $200 and certified mechanic with insane $/hour rate to keep the papers satisfying FAA. You can scrap another airplane with decent papers for parts to do it, but it is not a cheap option too.
When maintenance cost more than fuel and takes a lot of time, mostly for paperwork, many will abandon airplane in barn.
