I don't know about Polybius but I can attest that video screens CAN reprogram you a bit.

In the mid 1990s I worked on a project for a Silicon Valley company that needed me to frequently shift between a Sun Microsystems system CRT monitor, which used one scan rate, and a different system having a different CRT scan rate. Because we were on a death march project schedule, I spent a day alternating between systems rapidly, for 16 hours. When it was time to go home, I walked out to my car and got in. When I looked at the hood, it was flowing like a waterfall, rippling and shifting. My vision was fucked somehow. I could not drive. I had to go back in and crash on the floor. I realize the multiple monitors and scan rates had temporarily reprogrammed my visual system through fatigue of the nervous system.

I assume that on the right arcade system, a screen might be programmed to mess with the player's brain.

The movie The Ipcress File tried to simulate this in making a person open to suggestion.

I have heard of a terrifying image of “hell” that appeared if you beat a certain video game. The picture came from a lower 4D dimension I heard.

In the game, the final boss was Hillary Clinton, and if you beat her, the game showed you a picture of Nancy Pelosi to punish you.
