I did the math a few months ago and iirc EVs use something like 1/4 the energy of a combustion vehicle. This is largely because coal heating steam is way more efficient capture of energy than combustion. So, all things being equal, there's a market arbitrage opportunity here that will motivate the continued movement in this direction independent of politics.
