Here's a very subtle way we're programmed to hate Nazis: in every movie we see them smoking, often in some rude or inappropriate way, like sparking up just before they blow some dude's head off. It's supposed to convey their moral dissolution, and I would say it succeeds.
But the Nazis were very anti-tobacco, and Germans smoked at 1/4 the rate of Americans at that time. Himmler, as head of the SS, forbid smoking at all of their facilities.
If Rachel Maddow ever has to addresss this, I suspect she'll say, "The Nazis just hated people relaxing with two hot lung-fulls of flavor. My body, my choice, Heinie! What total tightasses! What were they, a bunch of Republicans?"
