I'm much more prosaic about this. In 2010, the Tea Party swept into power. People were as pissed then as they are now. The result was an asto-turfed Occupy Wallstreet counter-movement combined with the Tea Party being subverted, or co-opted, by the GOP establishment types. When the Occupy folks and the Tea Party types found common ground being pissed at big banks, they astro-turfed critical race theory going mainstream.
I suspect something similar to happen again. The only problem I see, though, is that society is getting whip-sawed back and forth to much and to fast, and without the benefit of believing that the back and forth is a result of the will of the people via elections. Trump exposed the rigged game, and that has bigger consequences than they realize.
Rome didn't co-opt Christianity, it was converted by it.
