The problem is they will kill many of us before they will fail.

Exactly this may happen.
You need to realize most of the survivors are already PTSD ridden, catatonic, schizoid and insane, and most youth at the age of 20 or below (which would arguably take up at least 20% of survivors) don't have much going with them and a 22 year old man can have the same education standards as an 8 year old in the year 2002.
Oh and most city centers will be abandoned urban ruins infested with vines, wild animals or poisonous snakes.
Think about that.
