TBF I’m thinking long term not necessarily current state. Though even so I’m not sure that I’d classify them as orthogonal. They’re moving together across time, correlated. Similar to ICANN .: it didn’t cause Google to dominate but it made it possible and it gained traction because of its utility in this task
Okay I cede your point: DRM is more similar to ICANN than NFTs. The idea of a ledger tied to possession of digital assets that makes it a little more robust than DRM. There’s also this idea of distributed contracting which makes some more complex policies possible.
It’s also peculiar in the sense that ownership could be ascribed after possession takes place eg you steal a meme, it gets purchased, now you are out of compliance. In order To use your device on our network you must verify your site in compliance therefore install our malware.
