I'd get 1 year's+ worth of food and all the basic supplies you need with a means to defend it all, then silver with what's left over.
Too many have like 20k in silver but one week's worth of food in their house. Often in the worst part of a collapse, people are looking for food/supplies/ammo/medical at first and metals aren't traded until stability starts to form again.
Every month now I try and get $50-$100 in canned meats, you want more than just rice and beans. SPAM fries well and lasts a long time, better than its reputation and higher quality ham/pork than hotdogs for example. $35-$38 per 12-pack. Corned beef, corned beef hash, canned tamales, chicken breast, roast beef and gravy, pineapple, etc.. Then get a $30 camp stove with some propane or butane canisters. Then get boxes of instant rice to be able to heat it up on the stove in seconds and then mix some of your canned meats over. Hot chocolate and coffee for morale.
I'd also stock up on BIC lighters and Sawyer portable water filters (for use and trade).
Form local relationships around you where you can trade, have some chickens if possible, get plenty of various seeds, I grow a lot of spinach and medicinal herbs like oregano that's antiviral/antibacterial.
If you want to store food but don't have so much money to do the above, do this third world version:
All of the above stuff can last 20+ years with correct storage (don't believe me? Learn from squirrels: https://www.livescience.com/64104-how-do-squirrels-find-buried-nuts.html and bury your food in multiple safe spots (with proper water proofing of course) because your guns aren't going to protect it from government seizures (this is what happened in Bolshevik revolution). Guns are good for guerilla warfare etc. but no good if armed government agents come to search your house.
If you can't afford piles of silver, remember food and water too can be traded for medicines etc.
Why silver over gold? Your $20k silver example weighs 25kg (56lbs). The same value of gold is less than 1lb.
If two men had to hike over a mountain to barter for a car...
