There are a few places where there are decent sheriffs but it's looking to me like around 90% are bad in the US and ready to put us all in gulags if asked, and the rest who virtue signal to care about us would also mostly fall in line when their threatened to be fired if they don't.

Everyone is "just doing their job" when SHTF and people are desperate to feed their families and end up wanting to be on what they believe will be the winning team of the government (they would rather fight for tyranny and stay alive than fight for what's good and true and die for it).

Most humans will side with evil to avoid pain and suffering. Many others enjoy inflicting suffering but wear a mask in society and it's only in Lord of the Flies type situations you see their masks come off.

The road of those who stay true to what's good and noble in the face of death is very narrow.
