It's a setup for something big in the future.
Be it decade long lockdowns, world war III, United States being occupied by the UN, Communist revolution, Civil War.
All of them WILL give them the perfect justification for purging dissidents using FEMA Camps, unleash perfect censorship, lock the internet behind real person ID and basically turn it into a strange creature resembling the TV.
If you want to look at how the breakdown plays out, imagine World War II or the Communist China Revolution of 1966.
