These aren’t new problems. China & Russia solved them years ago by blocking FANG. It’s not just to protect their citizens but it seemed to have more to do with the fact that if they didn’t, users wouldn’t use the gov alternatives. Without users, their services wouldn’t have been able to grow to compete with FANG and in a lot of ways, their services are already out competing ours which has US companies shitting themselves.
if we combine this with the fact that Twitter and Google decided that they don’t want anything to do with us, there’s an opportunity for a company like gab to scoop us up and create a potentially larger & more open/diverse user base. The platform that has the largest and diverse user base always wins. nobody is going to shitpost on Twitter when they could shitpost to a larger audience somewhere else.
it would be trivial to set up a dns server to do something like this. It could even be distributed to leftists via adware. if people knew their tweets weren’t accessible by half the country, they would probably put more of an effort in using alt tech
