From reddit homeschool:
Are there any parents that would be interested in doing zoom "play dates" or socialization chats with kids around the age of 7? (self.homeschool)
Not a single person said this is insane and damaging.

We have a 7 year old daughter we are homeschooling and we also just moved to a different state. We figured that maybe a zoom play date or lunch chat with other kids her age would be a good option for safe socialization for right now and wanted to see if there are any other parents who would be interested in doing this with us.

Yes! My daughter is 8 and Looking for friend. I'll PM. I'll be more than happy to talk with you and zoom with you first. Thank youπ»

Aw this is a great idea. I have a 7 year old girl who would just love this. I also have a 8 year old boy and 5 year old daughter if anyone has siblings and want to make some virtual friends. :)

All are welcome! If your other kids would benefit from this even if the ages vary a little, they are more than welcome! π

I'm so glad there are other parents who are for this! I have a question for you guys. Would you rather do one on one play dates, or see if we can do group ones?

If your budget allows for it, Outschool offers social classes. Some are purely social others have a strong social aspect. My daughter did very well in a Lego class and is now doing an art sharing class. Its not the same thing as a purely self directed play but it has other strengths.

Is it virtual or in person?

Another vote for Outschool. There are a lot of social classes but a teacher is in the room to make sure itβs all safe. We love the lego classes.

https://outschool.com/ is a a-la cart style online private school. Teachers post classes they know they can teach and parents/kids pick them. By being short, focused classes it avoids alot of the flaws of zoom based education. I'm a big fan. Also, class size is stated and usually small so kids get a lot of attention and social.
You could also see it as digital extra-curricular. It really depends on how you are using it.

Oh wow. I'll definitely check that out too! Thanks! It sounds like it'd be good for the elective classes like art and music and such too which we are having trouble finding lol.

I actually love this idea. My son is 6, going on 7. He's also being homeschooled. And I've been talking to my husband about how I worry he has no one to socialize with. This is where it gets tricky though, I'm an introvert. I have been working on "getting out there". So this seems like something my son, and myself would love to do.

My 8 year old daughter was just asking for something like this a few days ago. She'd also like to zoom call while playing Roblox if possible.
Taking bets for how long it takes for the first pedophile to figure out how to use the youth filter and alter the pitch of the audio to infiltrate one of these pathetic "zoom playdates" and start talking about how "we sucked each others dicks"
Unbelievable.
That any par ant thinks zoombie dates are "good"....
