Ellul lays it out in The Technological Society (1963). Once we went from tools to machines, we doomed ourselves to become tools of the machines.

Our hope as humans is to turn away from the material but the forces against that are massive.

Efficiency and optimization and the rational will grind us into dust.

And I am an professional optimizer :(
