Yeah, I did my Masters Thesis on the control of culture by big-tech.
Humble brag - my jewish marxist supervisor was sharing it around the department as recommended reading (I chose him on purpose so I knew my audience was the enemy).
I've spent 30+ years doing IT and now I wish I had done something else. It is a tainted profession.
It is the worse that it has been in such along long time. A new age approaches and with all the hallmarks of past cycles. It is no longer freedom but absolute dystopia. It is no longer hope but despair. It is no longer a solution but the problem being forced to cause absolute control. This new age isn't better when it threatens.
We are entering an age where if we go back to previous revolutions when automation, like the automobile appeared prior to the World Wars is what it's like today. Technology caused both World Wars. It rarely causes a renaissance because that happens when an invention appears prior to it gaining dominance. It assumes solution and everything prior is sooner destroyed or subjugated. When computers appeared they caused a renaissance with the Internet and briefly the globe peaked and changed. Now technology strives for absolute control providing complete automation and ai.
Today it is causing unthinkable problems which won't be solved without another cycle reoccurring. With it population control.

Ellul lays it out in The Technological Society (1963). Once we went from tools to machines, we doomed ourselves to become tools of the machines.
Our hope as humans is to turn away from the material but the forces against that are massive.
Efficiency and optimization and the rational will grind us into dust.
And I am an professional optimizer :(
