There’s a gun buyback happening in my town and everyone on social media is arguing about the practice. I’ve tried looking into what happens after the local PD obtains the guns, they claim they are melted down and they sell the scrap metal. I have a hard time believing that, does anyone have any declass info or other evidence that shows that’s not actually what they do? Thanks in advance!

The fast and furious “project gunrunner” was my first thought for where to start looking but they weren’t clear about where the guns they sold to cartel members in Mexico came from. We’re they illegal guns bc they were “stolen/no serial numbers/used in crimes” or illegal guns bc the people buying them aren’t allowed to own or possess firearms?
That particular case was a few straw purchasers stateside buying guns for the cartel. They were tipped off by various gun shop owners so they start OP F&F but didnt really do anything about it and later a border agent was killed by a couple of those firearms.
But US alphabet orgs did arm Mujahideen (al qaeuda), ISIS, FSA, and rebels in Venezuela. These are not always military grade weapons deals as the US does not want to make it look like they are dealing arms so in the case of VZ they send down pistols and AR15 sporting rifles, which are not designed for the battlefield. It is likely they send out confiscated weapons as oppossed to purchasing new ones in those deals to save on the budget and make the rebels look like ragtag misfits who got their guns naturally.
