France declared war on Germany, after the latter attacked Poland to reclaim Danzig from occupation.
Both France and Britain were preparing for war and just needed to provoke Germany into striking first. Soviets had a plan to invade Germany as well (operation groza), but they were too busy with Poland and Finland themselves.
There were almost 50 assassination attempts against Hitler before the war even began.
If he didn't attack USSR first, the entire Europe would have been communist. He took out most of their army and damaged their infrastructure, so they had no means to expand after WW2.
Hitler freed the German residents in Poland from the occupation. A lot of former German territories were returned.
There have been fewer rapes during the entire French occupation by Nazis, than within a month after allies invaded.
POW work camps were a normal practice around the world back then. Americans had Japanese in the camps, British had Germans, soviets had everyone. It was pretty much prisons with workforce focus.
Nazi soldiers committed fewer rapes than either soviets or allies. Both by numbers and percentage. Nazis also reprimanded and sometimes executed their rapists, whilst soviets were encouraging them.
Like I said, France declared war on Germany first. In fact, French had already sacked several German cities between WW1 and WW2, but Hitler never seeked retaliation until the official declaration.
After the war began, it took him less than a month to march his army to Paris and force French to surrender and become a temporary German colony. Despite that, French people were treated well by Nazis, and majority of the population was fine with the occupation.
