Lets say it were even US nautical miles. It gives about 40 km. Let's assume you are neither lying nor trolling (but I suspect you are rather troll than so big idiot): the difference would be about 36 cm (~14,18 inch !)
As I am engineer with a degree I know something about lasers. You probably wouldn't afford to buy high coherence laser which would be coherent enough on the distance of 40 km to measure such thing ! And you didn't bought it - you just said "laser pointer" ! Laser pointers are at best coherent over 100m, maybe few hundred meters at mximum - so much less than on mile ! Not to mention keeping laser pointer in hand (fuck - even if it would be laser level which are useful in building buildings not scientific measurements) wouldn't allow to even get ideal horizontal position to measure anything. More than 1 km and that "laser beam" would be like flash-light (still maybe dangerous) rather,so forget exact results. Your "measurement" was completely shitty.

You build a a holder for the laser and at the destination use a reflective plate so you can see.
