Power and limited resources. People living happily in the middle class likely won't work the hours they want them too, they want to be paid more than tptb want to pay them, and they use more precious resources.
They destroy the family unit and no one's there to protect the children from indoctrination/exploitation. You get people hooked on drugs and they will steal from family members and sell most of the things they have for more drugs. They go to jail and those in power use them as slave labor. You have people working 80 hour weeks because "at least" they have a job, and when they are off work they believe whatever the news tells them and spends their small salary on things to cope with thier pain.
