I've only banned three non-spammers since the beginning, and they all were for actual violent rhetoric against .win users.
The latest example was among the worst forum sliders on the site, and recently said this in an already heated exchange:
If you're going to shit on every thread with hundreds of comments and issue veiled threats against the community here, that's going to earn you a ban.

i was literally recruited from digg to come to reddit when reddit was in alpha/beta mode, because they didn't have any users at reddit, and i was a well known power user at digg. i was the tip of the spear of the first great digg exodus
i can't remember his exact name, but i called him QUIGY2 or whatever, haven't seen him in years
