In my opinion, the 'matrix' in the film is a metaphor for our physical world, and the 'real world' of the film is a metaphor for our existence as energetic beings on the astral plane.
When we practice meditation, we can begin to perceive our true self, either as an energetic being, or more deeply, in oneness with pure universal consciousness.
